Hey Scarborough! Here's what's happening this week π
North Yorkshire Council is taking legal action against the York and North Yorkshire Combined Authority - the regional body it sits within - over Β£20 million it says has been stripped from road repairs, with Β£4 million already quietly redirected to York. A council suing its own umbrella organisation is not a sentence you expect to type, but here we are.
The bookmakers, meanwhile, have quietly made this week interesting. Whitby sits at 8/1 and Scarborough at 9/1 for UK Town of Culture 2028 - close enough that there's a genuine local derby developing, even if Reading at 4/6 is still in a different race entirely. Whether the odds reflect anything real is another matter, but it's the kind of thing worth keeping an eye on as the year progresses.
Jimmy Nail sold out Scarborough Spa in August faster than most people noticed it was on sale, so a second night has been added - Sunday 26th July. He'll be reflecting on a career that's taken in Auf Wiedersehen Pet, Crocodile Shoes, and rather a lot of stages. Tickets and 1626 Suite upgrades are available now.
And if you're looking for somewhere to stay this spring, Swinton Park Hotel - a Grade II listed castle on a 20,000-acre Yorkshire estate - has a Spring B&B Sale running until 30 April, covering all room types, Sunday to Thursday.

Gray Hair? This Is How You Reduce It Naturally
Most men dealing with gray hair have two options: live with it or dye it. Dye works, but it has a tell. The roots. The uniformity. The fact that it looks like something you did rather than something you have.
But now there is a third option: Particle Anti-Gray Serum. A daily spray that works at the root to gradually restore your natural color β hair and beard β without dye, without mess, without anyone knowing you're doing anything at all. Premium ingredients. Clinically researched. Thirty-day guarantee. Over 1,000,000 men use Particle because the results look like them.

βοΈ Council Takes Own Mate to Court. North Yorkshire Council has launched legal action against the York and North Yorkshire Combined Authority - the body it technically sits within - over a budget decision it says will strip Β£20m from road repairs. The council argues Β£4m of its allocation has already been quietly redirected to York.
π Scarborough in the Culture Sweepstakes. Scarborough is 9/1 for UK Town of Culture 2028, with Whitby already a length ahead at 8/1. Reading leads the field at 4/6.
π Yorkshire Water's Beach Team Lands. Yorkshire Water has built a dedicated eight-person bathing water quality team, focused specifically on Scarborough's beaches. It was set up last year.
π° Stay at a Grade II Listed Castle - 25% Off Until the End of April. Swinton Park Hotel is a historic castle on a 20,000-acre Yorkshire estate. The Spring B&B Sale covers all room types, including suites, from Sunday to Thursday until 30 April 2026. Check the reviews before booking.
π₯ Filey Bay's Finest, 294 Bottles Only. Spirit of Yorkshire's latest single cask was hand-picked from six options by The Whisky Shop York manager after a day in the Filey Bay warehouse. Only 294 bottles are available across 13 UK stores - York included.
π€ Jimmy Nail Gets a Second Night. The August show at Scarborough Spa sold out, so the Geordie icon is back on Sunday 26th July for a second night, reflecting on his career. Tickets and 1626 Suite upgrades are available now.
β½ Fracking Fight Comes to a Head. Europa Oil & Gas's application to drill at Burniston finally goes before North Yorkshire planners on 24th April, with over 1,600 objections from residents, parish councils and the local MP. The applicant calls it "very straightforward."
π½ Spending a Penny Gets Pricier. North Yorkshire Council is weighing a standard 40p or 50p charge across its 93 public toilets - the largest network of its kind in the UK. Nearly 90% of current income comes from sites whose fees haven't changed in almost two decades.
π SJT Lands Β£2.7m for a Proper Refit. The Stephen Joseph Theatre has secured Β£2.7 million from the Arts Council to refurbish the McCarthy Auditorium, fix a persistently leaking roof, and improve accessibility. It received the region's largest share of a Β£127.8 million national fund.
π£ Whitby Rowers Make It to Copenhagen. Members of Whitby's Friendship Rowing Club - founded in 1879 - took turns on rowing machines until they'd covered the equivalent distance to Denmark, raising Β£1,500 for WHISH, which supports over 200 disabled children in the Whitby and Esk Valley area.
π§ Β£150m to Clean Up Scarborough's Act. Yorkshire Water is committing up to Β£150 million to cut sewer overflows on Scarborough's beaches to no more than two per season by 2030. A Β£2.4m upgrade at Wheatcroft is already done and storm overflow discharge fell 83% during last summer's bathing season.
π€ Scarborough and Whitby Crews Had a Busy Year. Scarborough RNLI launched 59 times in 2025, Whitby 42 - over a hundred combined along this stretch of coast alone. The charity is now asking the public to walk a Mayday Mile to help fund crews who saved 272 lives across the UK last year.
