Three projects in Scarborough and Whitby have landed more than £250,000 from the Mayor's High Streets Fund, with Eastborough Traders, Crescent Arts in Falsgrave, and a Whitby winter events programme sharing the pot. Elsewhere, North Yorkshire schools have had a good year quietly. A record 96 per cent of families got their first-choice primary - up from 95 per cent last year, and comfortably ahead of the national figure of 92.6 per cent.

🧛 Goths Return to Dracula's Doorstep. The Gothic Gathering runs 23-26 April in Whitby, with markets, poetry nights, and a Masquerade Ball for VIP ticket holders.

🖼️ Whitby's Shops Become a Gallery. Around 35 artworks are appearing in shop windows and venues across Flowergate, Skinner Street and Silver Street as part of The Great Exhibition, running until 4 May. 🏫 North Yorkshire Schools Hit Record. A record 96 per cent of North Yorkshire families got their first-choice primary school this year, up from 95 per cent in 2025. The national figure last year was 92.6 per cent.

🔥 Moor Fire Near Fylingdales Contained. Crews from Whitby, Robin Hood's Bay and Scarborough attended a 20m x 5m moorland blaze on 15 April, extinguishing it with extended hose reels and knapsacks. Fire service confirmed it was unrelated to last year's record-breaking Langdale/Fylingdales fire.

🍺 Old Post Office Gets a New Round In. The Whitby Crown is taking over the 18th-century former Post Office on Church Street and converting it into a bar. A log burner, new bar top, and a lick of paint are planned - the listed building's layout stays largely intact.

⛽ Gas Rig Fight Heads to Town Hall. Campaigners are rallying outside Scarborough Town Hall at midday on 24 April, ahead of a council vote on a proposed 38-metre drilling rig in Burniston. The application has drawn more than 1,600 objections. The company has described the rig as temporary - though its gas field plans span 10 to 20 years.

🌱 Get Your Hands Dirty in Whitby. The Growing Together Gardening Club is hosting a free drop-in Grow Your Own workshop at the Coliseum Community Cafe on 21 April, noon to 2.30 pm. Pot up herbs, salads or flowers - refreshments included.

⚓ Cook's Endeavour Up for Sale. The 33-metre replica of HM Bark Endeavour, moored in Whitby Harbour, has been put on the market. Built in Stockton-on-Tees in the early 1990s, it's one of only two replicas in the world - the other is in Sydney.

🗑️ Tip Rules Change, Fly-Tipping Fears Grow. From 27 April, North Yorkshire residents will need to register their vehicles before using any of the county's 20 household waste recycling centres. The council says outside visitors currently account for one in six users, costing taxpayers up to £400,000 a year.
