Hey Scarborough! Here's what's happening this week 👋

Two sets of scientists have now looked into why Scarborough's South Bay keeps failing its bathing water tests. They agree on Scalby Beck. They don't entirely agree on what's going into it. Seagulls remain under suspicion. Donkeys do not.

If you're planning to be on the York line anytime soon, the news is fine, eventually. Two additional trains are coming - a 6.35 am from York and a 7.30 am from Scarborough - from December 2028. The half-hourly service remains a work in progress.

The Simon and Garfunkel Story is back at the Spa Theatre on 23rd May, with a full live band and West End cast. It sold out last time, which is probably all you need to know.

If the Easter forecast - 70mph gusts from Saturday evening - has you reconsidering outdoor plans, the Feversham Arms in Helmsley is running a spring overnight package with the heated pool, Verbena Spa treatment, and breakfast. Reviews are decent.

It's all in the newsletter.

Travellers on TripAdvisor have ranked Es Princep as the number one hotel in Playa de Mallorca, and the location plays a big part in that. It sits right by Palma’s historic city walls, with views across Palma Bay, making it easy to explore the old town on foot while still feeling slightly removed from the busiest areas.

The rooms are light and uncluttered, with large windows, modern bathrooms and either sea or city views. They are comfortable places to spend time, rather than just somewhere to sleep.

The hotel works particularly well if you want a central base without being right in the middle of nightlife. The spa, pools and on-site dining make it easy to slow things down between exploring, and the overall feel is polished but not showy.

📰 Scarborough Life

🏚️ £750k For Empty Town Centre. North Yorkshire Council is proposing £750,000 to advance redevelopment plans for vacant sites, including the town hall. The council says it does not want the town hall to become another prominent empty building.

🚂 Two Extra Trains. Wait Until 2028. Scarborough to York commuters hoping for a half-hourly service will instead get two additional trains each way from December 2028 - a 6.35 am from York and a 7.30 am from Scarborough. The line currently runs one train per hour.

🎸 The Sound of Scarborough. The Simon and Garfunkel Story returns to the Spa Theatre on Saturday, 23rd May, with a full live band and West End cast performing the full back catalogue. It sold out last year.

🌸 A Helmsley Spa Hotel Is Running a Spring Overnight Package. The Feversham package includes use of the heated outdoor pool and Verbena Spa, plus a 60-minute treatment per guest - breakfast is included. Book direct for the deal, check out the reviews first.

🩺 MP 'Really Concerned' About Doctors' Strike. Scarborough and Whitby MP Alison Hume has called resident doctors' pay demands "unaffordable" as a six-day strike looms from 7 April. York and Scarborough Teaching Hospitals have warned that some appointments may need rescheduling.

💨 Easter Winds Warning Issued. The Met Office has issued a yellow warning for very strong winds across northern England from 6 pm Saturday to midday Sunday. Gusts of up to 70mph are expected, with travel disruption and possible power cuts likely.

🏥 Trolley Waits Falling at Scarborough Hospital. York and Scarborough Teaching Hospitals recorded 406 twelve-hour trolley waits in February, down from 930 in January. York Hospital recorded zero on 22 March - Scarborough is described as "struggling a bit more."

🌱 Allotments Stuck in No Man's Land. Scarborough's council allotments in Falsgrave and Stepney are "not fit for transfer" to the town council until safety and infrastructure issues are resolved. Neither authority has agreed to fund the remediation work.

🏢 Where Will the Public Go? North Yorkshire Council is buying Resolution House to replace the crumbling town hall, but councillors are asking how residents will get there - there is no direct bus service to the site. The last Whitby area committee was standing room only.

🛣️ Mayor Grilled Over A64 Climbdown. North Yorkshire Council leaders have challenged Mayor David Skaith to confirm he hasn't abandoned A64 dualling after the scheme was dropped from the Government's five-year road plan. Skaith said he would "keep pushing" but warned the price tag is "through the roof."

🦅 Seagulls, Sewage, and Scalby Beck. Two scientific studies into Scarborough's bathing water quality agree that Scalby Beck is the main pollution route - but disagree on whether seagulls are to blame. Donkeys, at least, have been exonerated.

🛋️ Vintage Fair Comes to the Old Parcels Office. The first Scarborough Vintage Home Fair brings 20 stalls of furniture and homewares from the 1920s to 1980s to the railway station car park on 2-3 May. Admission is £2 at the door.

🍺 Whitby Beer Festival Returns in July. The Whitby Beer Festival is back at the Mission and Seafarers Centre on Haggersgate from 23-26 July, with 30+ real ales and ciders for £5 entry. All proceeds go to Whitby District Lions Club.

🚌 Mayor Told to 'Step Up' on Buses. North Yorkshire Council has deferred handing bus powers to Mayor David Skaith until March 2027, with council leaders accusing him of failing to deliver on his election promise. NYC will continue managing services in the meantime, funded by the Combined Authority.

🏰 Scarborough Castle Now Open Daily. Scarborough Castle is open seven days a week from 28 March, 10 am to 5 pm. Worth the climb.

🛍️ New Market and Guidebook for Scarborough. A monthly artisan market launches on St Helen's Square on 12 April, alongside the first new guide to Scarborough in 30 years. St Helen's Square was Scarborough's original medieval marketplace.
