Hey Scarborough! Here's what's happening this week π
Someone has looked at Scarborough and decided what it really needs is a tanning salon on Filey Road. That's one small part of a much larger retail development proposed for Filey Road - a 2,700 sq metre supermarket, drive-throughs, pharmacies and restaurants. Scarborough Town Council is already warning that it could become a full-out-of-town retail park. The planning process has a long way to run, but the direction of travel is fairly clear.
Meanwhile, the council's allotment situation has taken an unpleasant turn. Inspections found asbestos sheeting, neglected sites and unclear tenancies across North Yorkshire Council's plots - and Scarborough Town Council is refusing to take them on until remediation is agreed. There are 340 people on the waiting list for those allotments.
On a more straightforward note, the Aquapark at North Yorkshire Water Park is back open for Easter, with new obstacles added to the course and wetsuits included free with Easter holiday bookings.
And if the bank holiday calls for something altogether calmer, Goldsborough Hall - a former royal residence with 17 rooms and a three-rosette restaurant - has a one-night package running with cream tea, dinner and breakfast included. Read the reviews and book direct for the deal.

If you want a spa experience that feels genuinely different, Hazlewood Castle stands out for its setting rather than flashy extras. The thermal suite is built into the original stone walls of the castle keep, which gives it a calm, enclosed feel you do not get in modern spa hotels. With a Finnish sauna, aroma steam room and raindrop showers, it is designed for lingering.
The wider setting matters just as much. The castle sits in 77 acres of woodland between Leeds and York, so it is easy to step outside, walk it off, and enjoy the contrast between spa time and fresh air. It is close enough for a short break, but far enough to feel like a proper change of scene.

πͺ Out-of-Town Retail Plan Raises Eyebrows. A 2,700 sq metre supermarket, drive-through, pharmacies, restaurants and a tanning salon are proposed for Filey Road under plans from Cliff Court Developments Ltd. Scarborough Town Council has already warned it could pave the way for a full-out-of-town retail park.
π₯ Hospital Inches Forward, MP Unimpressed. Scarborough Hospital's medical care rating has improved from "requires improvement" to "goodβ, - but the overall rating stays at "requires improvement." MP Alison Hume notes stroke services remain a particular concern.
π¦ Aquapark Is Back for Easter. North Yorkshire Water Park has reopened its inflatable Aquapark with new challenges added for this season. Wetsuits are included free with bookings made during the Easter holidays.
πΈ A 400-Year-Old Royal Home in Yorkshire Has a One-Night Package Deal. Goldsborough Hall was once a royal residence and still feels like one, with just 17 rooms and a three-rosette restaurant. Cream tea, dinner, and breakfast included. Book direct for the deal, check the reviews beforehand.
π₯ Whitby Distillery Opens the Books. The distillery has launched a Β£200,000 crowdfunding round on Seedrs to complete its new site beside Whitby Abbey, due to open April next year. The money will fund a tasting bar, retail space and tours - and kickstart the distillery's first whisky, made with Whitby Brewery.
π The Spa's Promenade Lounge Gets a Refresh. Scarborough Spa has reopened its Promenade Lounge following a refurbishment designed to blend the building's history with a more modern finish. It's being pitched as a ceremony and events space.
π± Allotments Have an Asbestos Problem. Scarborough Town Council is refusing to take on North Yorkshire Council's allotment sites until remediation is agreed - inspections found long-term neglect, unclear tenancies and asbestos sheeting on at least one site. There are 340 people on the waiting list.
π§ Scarborough's Spa Waters Turn 400. A year-long exhibition at the Scarborough Maritime Heritage Centre on Eastborough marks the discovery that turned the town into Britain's first seaside resort. It also traces local Titanic connections via James Paul Moody, a Scarborough native who went down with the ship in 1912.
πΈ Whitby's 60s Festival Turns 21. The Whitby 60s Festival returns for two weekends at Whitby Pavilion in June and September, with Steve Ellis headlining in June. Tickets are still available for both.
ποΈ Scarborough College Plans Edwardian Pavilion. The school has applied to replace two sheds with a two-storey, 432 sq metre sports pavilion designed to match the Edwardian character of the surrounding conservation area. No decision date has been set.
π§ Alpamare Spa Memberships Now Available. Alpamare Scarborough has launched rolling monthly spa memberships - Β£76 for weekdays or Β£106 for seven days - with no long-term commitment. The spa is approaching its 50th membership enrolment, and whoever gets there first wins a bottle of Moet.
