Scarborough Hospital Facing £31 Million Crisis
🌟 The Scarborough Rundown - Events, Activities, Live Music & Good News! 😊
Hi folks,
There is a lot to catch up on this week, with major local stories sitting alongside the usual mix of entertainment, community events, and chances to get out and enjoy Scarborough.
Many conversations right now are centred on Scarborough Hospital and the financial challenges it is facing. News of a large deficit and ongoing building problems has put a spotlight on the pressures facing local healthcare.
At the same time, Scarborough’s bid to become a UK Town of Culture is generating a real sense of pride. The proposal celebrates our history, arts, and community projects, and it could open the door to new opportunities if the town is successful.
We are also giving readers the chance to win tickets to see The Rob Dylan Band live at Scarborough Spa. If that sounds like your kind of night, make sure you enter the competition.
Scroll on for the full list of events and see what is happening near you this week.

📰 Scarborough Life
🏥 NHS Trust faces £31m black hole. Crumbling infrastructure at Scarborough Hospital, including a leaky maternity roof, is driving a massive deficit. Bosses warn of potential service cuts unless they fix the finances.
⛽ Burniston gas rig plans hit the brakes. In a classic "wait for it" moment, the Government has swooped in to stall a decision on a controversial 38m drilling rig just days before the big reveal. Over 1,600 locals are holding their breath while the Planning Inspectorate decides if this project is a gas or a pass.
🎄 Council seeks "glow-up" on someone else's tab. Scarborough Fair is hunting a regional grant so we don't blow our own £70k on Christmas lights. If the bid lands, we might actually fund local community groups instead.
🎭 Is Scarborough the next "it" girl of culture? We are gunning for a massive £3.5 million prize in the UK’s inaugural Town of Culture contest. With our 400th anniversary as a spa resort looming, it is time to prove we are much more than just fish and chips.
💸 Water bills are going up a splash. Yorkshire Water is hiking household rates by 5.6% this April to fund a massive £8.3bn investment. While the extra cash aims to fix leaky pipes and stop storm overflows, your wallet might feel a bit drained.
🚂 Clocking off soon at the station. The £14 million restoration of Scarborough station is on the home stretch, complete with hawks to scare off pesky gulls and a fancy £203k clock tower glow-up. Expect full 19th-century vibes and shiny new lighting by 31 March!
🕰️ Council snubs £20,000 golden clock repair bill. Scarborough's "beautiful" gilded timepiece faces an uncertain future as councillors refuse to fund the hefty refurbishment. The Civic Society is now searching for a way to save the landmark.
🦉 Whitby Wildlife Sanctuary up for Yorkshire rescue award. The local team is thrilled to be nominated for Animal Rescue Centre of the Year. They need your help to win, so cast your vote to support our coastal wildlife.
👻 Spooky walks return to Scarborough this February. Join Black Widow Tours for tales of murder and the paranormal during half term. Tickets start at £6 for a spine-shivering evening. Book your tour here.
🏔️ Mountain Rescue Team to host 'Summit Stories' fundraiser. Join SRMRT at Pickering's Kirk Theatre on 20 February for an inspiring film night. Win raffle prizes like Faction skis or Alpamare tickets while supporting lifesaving moorland rescues.
🎬 Scarborough’s young directors are ready for their close-up. PQA students are swapping the South Bay for the silver screen at a glitzy York cinema premiere. It is time to roll out the red carpet for our local Hollywood hopefuls.
