Deep Cuts Loom As Hospital Deficit Hits £28.5m

Hey Scarborough! Here's what's happening this week 👋

It’s been a week of balancing acts and bracing for impact across Scarborough. The trust running our local hospitals is currently staring into a £28.5 million black hole. While bosses are busy sketching out a "waste reduction" programme to steady the ship over the next three years, the scale of the deficit remains a sobering reminder of the pressure on our frontline services.

Looking back to last summer, we finally have answers regarding the Langdale Moor blaze. Investigators have confirmed that the massive 40-day fire, which threatened RAF Fylingdales, was sparked by a simple campfire used for cooking. It is a stark lesson on how quickly a bit of outdoor catering can scorch ten square miles of our countryside.

Meanwhile, the saga at Burniston continues to simmer. The Government has officially declined to intervene in the controversial gas rig proposal, passing the buck back to North Yorkshire Council. Despite over 1,600 objections and local fears of "fracking by another name," the final say on the 38-metre rig now rests with local planners.

📰 Scarborough Life

🔥 Langdale Moor Blaze Sparked by Campfire. An investigation has revealed that last August's massive 40-day fire was probably caused by someone cooking in the forest. The blaze scorched 10 square miles of moorland and threatened critical national infrastructure at RAF Fylingdales.

🏥 Hospital Finances in the Red. The trust behind Scarborough and York hospitals is staring down a grim £28.5 million deficit. Bosses hope to balance the books within three years, but only if they can successfully stomach a massive "waste reduction" programme.

🏨 MPs Revolt Over "Tourism Tax." Four North Yorkshire Conservative MPs have demanded a pause on the proposed visitor levy. They’ve branded the move a "tax on family holidays" that could cripple independent businesses, though Mayor David Skaith insists the fund will be a "game changer" for the local economy.

🏗️ Burniston Gas Rig Decision Passed Back. The Government has refused to "call in" the controversial drilling plans, leaving the final say to North Yorkshire Council. Despite 1,600 objections and claims that the extraction method is "fracking by another name," officers have previously recommended the 38m rig for approval.

🏥 Eastfield Medical Centre Eyes Reopening. After nearly a year of flood-induced chaos, MP Alison Hume suggests the surgery could finally reopen by late March. It’s a massive relief for 10,000 patients who have been trekking to temporary sites since last June.

🏏 Scarborough Cricket Stand Deemed Unsafe. A rigorous safety inspection has condemned the Peasholm Park End for the entire 2026 season. While the rest of the ground is open, the club admits years of financial hardship have taken a physical toll on the facilities. On the bright side, matchday tickets are frozen to help fans keep their cool.

🏚️ West Pier Building Cordoned Off. Engineers have shut down Building No. 1 on Scarborough’s West Pier after a visual inspection raised the alarm over its gable ends. Tenants and the public toilets are being moved out while the council investigates the structural integrity of the regeneration site.

🌊 Nature-Based Defences for Scalby Ness. A £100,000 scheme is set for approval to battle coastal erosion near the Sea Life Centre. The council plans to use vegetation and sustainable designs to stabilise the cliffs, warning that doing nothing could leave residents unprepared for the eventual loss of property.

🚂 Full Steam Ahead for Cheap Seats. The NYMR is flipping the script on peak-time pricing by actually lowering fares and letting kids ride for free during the school holidays. A result for parents facing the half-term pricing.

🚽 Town Council Flushes Out New Plan. Following the Square One closure, the council is pitching a community toilet scheme. Local businesses might open their loos to the public in exchange for a bit of funding. Better than crossing your legs on Westborough.

🌿 Scalby Beck Goes Green. North Yorkshire Council has launched a five-year project to transform Scalby Beck into a nature reserve. Backed by £31,000, they are calling for volunteers to help build ponds, lay hedges, and keep an eye on the local newts.

🚗 Residents Stall North Marine Road Car Park. Neighbours have hit the brakes on plans to turn a derelict hotel site into a 21-space public car park. Objectors claim the "temporary" three-year scheme is a blot on the conservation area, while the applicant argues it's a better use of space than a building that's been rotting away for years.

Back of the Net for Sports Village. The next phase of repairs to Scarborough’s football pitch kicks off next week. Contractors will spend up to ten weeks fixing base defects to ensure competitive matches finally return to the 3G surface by August.

Travellers on TripAdvisor have ranked Es Princep as the number one hotel in Playa de Mallorca, and the location plays a big part in that. It sits right by Palma’s historic city walls, with views across Palma Bay, making it easy to explore the old town on foot while still feeling slightly removed from the busiest areas.

The rooms are light and uncluttered, with large windows, modern bathrooms and either sea or city views. They are comfortable places to spend time, rather than just somewhere to sleep.

The hotel works particularly well if you want a central base without being right in the middle of nightlife. The spa, pools and on-site dining make it easy to slow things down between exploring, and the overall feel is polished but not showy.
