Missing Millions Spark Twelve-Week Probe

Hey Scarborough! Here's what's happening this week 👋

Twelve Weeks To Find The Cash

The York and Scarborough Trust is staring down a £28.5 million hole in its budget, prompting a visit from the suits at KPMG. This twelve-week probe aims to find where the cash is vanishing and validate efficiency plans before things get even messier. It is a sobering reminder of the pressure on our local services, as complex needs continue to clog up hospital discharges and leave nearly a thousand patients waiting on trolleys.

Alpamare might be on the block for a private buyer, but the pools are still open for business. The Council is desperate for long-term stability after the recent £7.8m debt write-off and is looking to offload the freehold entirely. You can currently get in for a tenner, which is a bargain for a bit of low-season spa time while the future of the site is decided.

Coastal councillors are still at loggerheads over the motorhome parking ban in North Bay and Sandsend. While the ban keeps the seafront clear, residents in nearby streets are tired of finding laundry on their hedges and dealing with grey water. The "motorhome wars" show no sign of ending as the Council weighs up making these restrictions a permanent part of the landscape.

For a bit of country house comfort, Wrea Head Hall is running a staycation deal that includes dinner and breakfast for two. Located just outside Scarborough, the hotel offers a bit of fine dining and a break from the usual town-centre chaos. It is a great option if you fancy a three-course meal and a quiet night in the countryside.

📰 Scarborough Life

💸 NHS finance chiefs are calling in the suits. Faced with a massive £28.5m deficit, York and Scarborough Trust has hired KPMG to poke through the books. The twelve-week probe aims to find where the cash is vanishing and "validate efficiency plans" before things get even messier.

🌊 Alpamare waterpark is going on the block. North Yorkshire Council is scouting a private buyer for the site to secure long-term stability. They hope to offload the freehold after that messy £7.8m debt write-off.

🚐 The motorhome wars are heating up. Coastal councillors are clashing over plans to make the overnight parking ban permanent in Sandsend and North Bay. While some enjoy the peace, others say it just pushes campervans into residential streets, leaving locals to deal with grey water and laundry on hedges.

✨ Luxury for Less at Wrea Head Hall. Enjoy a stay at this elegant country house hotel just outside Scarborough, surrounded by peaceful countryside. Includes dinner, bed and breakfast for two, with a three-course à la carte dinner and a full Yorkshire breakfast the next morning. Enjoy fine dining and classic country house comfort.

🚽 Coast residents are still paying to pee. While the Council delays a county-wide 50p fee, coastal towns are stuck in a "two-tier system" where we pay while others don't. Standardising the charges might be the only way to fix our crumbling loos.

🏗️ Whitby’s retail expansion hits a wall. Yorkshire Trading Company’s plan to double its shop size and add eight flats faces a spate of local objections over its "generic" design. Critics also claim the firm has a habit of blocking pavements with goods without permission.

🐧 The clowns of the sea are back. The first puffins of 2026 have touched down at Bempton Cliffs to kick off breeding season. It’s a welcome return for these red-listed beauties following a worrying string of seabird deaths along the coast this winter.

🏥 Trolley waits are stacking up again. Another 930 patients spent over 12 hours on trolleys this January. The Trust blames "complex needs" and clogged hospital discharge, so maybe don't rush to A&E unless it’s actually life or death.

🐋 Whitby’s iconic arch is getting a makeover. After 170 years on West Cliff, the deteriorating whale bones are set for replacement. With real bones off the table, the Council is eyeing a bronze replica costing £60,000. Other options include hardwood or stainless steel, as sourcing the real thing from Alaska has hit a dead end.

💨 The Council is going all in on vaping. North Yorkshire is set to spend £477,000 on e-cigarette vouchers to help locals bin the cigs. It’s a rechargeable-only affair as disposables are now banned, but with a 75 per cent success rate so far, it’s not just blowing smoke.

🌳 Whitby needs your green fingers. The Yorkshire Wildlife Trust is urgently seeking volunteers to plant 10,000 trees this month for the BEACH Esk project. Help restore the River Esk by creating 1.5km of new hedgerows at nearby farms - just bring a packed lunch and sturdy boots.

🎸 The 60s are alive and kicking in Whitby. Celebrating its 21st year, the Whitby 60s Festival returns with two massive weekends this June and September. Headliners Steve Ellis and Paul Jones will be bringing back the good times to the Pavilion.

🚠 Whitby’s Cliff Lift might be going down for good. MP Alison Hume has joined the scrap to save the 93-year-old landmark from decommissioning. While the Council moans about repair costs hitting £5.5 million, locals reckon they’re just making excuses to knock down our coastal heritage.

🔥 The moor is slowly waking up. Six months after the Fylingdales fire, recovery is underway with teams laying biodegradable matting to stop soil erosion. The flames even revealed unrecorded historic features, giving archaeologists an accidental boost while the restoration process begins.

🕺 Fancy owning Whitby’s last dance? The "iconic" Raw Nightclub is on the market for £80,000. It’s a ready-to-go turnkey acquisition with two dance floors and bars, perfect for anyone brave enough to restart the party on Wellington Road.

🤠 Dust off your boots for the Big Xanders Hoedown. This Saturday, 7th March, Xanders is hosting a toe-tapping afternoon featuring two hours of bottomless drinks and afternoon tea. The spread is supplied by The Saucy Seagull, so message them quickly to secure your spot with a deposit.

🎭 SJT hits a major milestone. The Stephen Joseph Theatre is celebrating 30 years in the old Odeon building with a special concert performance of Honk!. The award-winning musical returns to its Scarborough roots, and you can even snag VIP tickets for a post-show gala and a bit of fizz.

🌿 Nature is getting a legally-mandated leg up. The North Yorkshire and York Local Nature Recovery Strategy is now live, aiming to save endangered local species like the Curlew and Water Vole. With 25% of our species in decline, it’s a vital plan to reconnect habitats across the region.

🚽 Filey’s seafront loos have been flushed. Structural issues have forced the shock closure of the Royal Parade toilets, leaving the Town Council "deeply disappointed". North Yorkshire Council is scrambling to install temporary facilities by the end of March to save the summer season.
