👻 Plan a Haunted Halloween Getaway

North Yorkshire’s Spookiest Hotels

If you’re planning a Halloween getaway, Scarborough is the perfect starting point for exploring North Yorkshire’s most haunted hotels. Begin with The Grand Hotel, Scarborough, where the legendary “Black Widow” and ghostly hounds are said to roam the cliff-top corridors. Just along the coast, Bagdale Hall in Whitby dates back to 1516 and is haunted by Browne Bushell, a naval officer executed for treason, whose footsteps are said to still echo on the stairs.

A short trip inland takes you to York, one of Europe’s most haunted cities. Stay at The Golden Fleece, home to at least 15 restless spirits, or The Black Swan, where you may encounter a bowler-hatted gentleman, a jilted bride, or even a singing highwayman. Opposite York Minster, the Dean Court Hotel terrifies guests with Roman soldiers and chilling encounters in Room 36, while the York Pavilion Hotel combines Georgian elegance with a reputation for ghostly presences.

For a mix of luxury and lore, head to Gisborough Hall Hotel, where a spectral butler and shadowy nursery figure are said to wander. In Pocklington, The Feathers tells the tragic tale of Charlotte, a woman killed by a highwayman, whose cries are still reported by visitors. Further north, the Black Swan Hotel in Helmsley enchants by day but unsettles by night, with apparitions roaming its 15th-century halls. Finally, in the heart of York, Middletons Hotel hides eerie sounds and shadowy figures behind its tranquil courtyards.
