Hey Scarborough! Here's what's happening this week π
The Scarborough Fair festival is arriving for its third season with 170 events across nearly 50 venues, running May to August - free outdoor events, an open-access fringe, workshops, and a Combined Authority grant helping foot the bill.
One of the highlights lands at the end of May: Scarborough Streets brings live music across the town centre for three days, including the Scarborough Wellbeing Choir, Korali Ukrainian Choir, and a Youth Musicians Stage. All free.
Two steam-hauled trains will run from Lancaster to Scarborough this summer in 1950s carriages that featured in the Harry Potter films, marking the town's 400th anniversary as a spa resort. Fares from Β£93, with a four-course dinner on the return leg.
Gary Barlow and Tim Firth's Calendar Girls musical is coming to the Stephen Joseph Theatre this summer - tickets are on sale now.
And if you're planning a stay around any of it, Mansion House on the Esplanade has a three-nights-for-two deal available when you book direct with the code STAY3FOR2.

π° Scarborough Life
πͺ 170 Events. One Summer. The Scarborough Fair festival returns for its third season across nearly 50 venues, running from May to August with free outdoor events, an open-access fringe, and workshops. A Β£149,479 grant from the Combined Authority is footing part of the bill.
π’οΈ Burniston Drilling Rig Rejected. North Yorkshire's planning committee has thrown out Europa Oil and Gas's application for a gas drilling rig near Burniston, citing harm to the heritage coast and national park views. The company says it will appeal.
π Harry Potter Comes to Scarborough. Two steam-hauled excursion trains will run from Lancaster to Scarborough this summer to mark the town's 400th anniversary as a spa resort, with passengers travelling in refurbished 1950s carriages that have featured in the Harry Potter films. Fares start at Β£93 - champagne and a four-course dinner on the return leg included.
β¨ Stay 3 Nights for the Price of 2 at Mansion House, Scarborough. The award-winning guest house on Scarboroughβs Esplanade is offering a book-direct deal. Use code STAY3FOR2 and get the third night free. See the offer details.
πΆ Town Centre Turned Open Stage. Scarborough Streets is bringing live music across the town centre, from the Scarborough Wellbeing Choir and Korali Ukrainian Choir to a dedicated Youth Musicians Stage. It's free, it's part of the wider Scarborough Fair programme, and it runs 29-31 May.
π Campervan Ban Is Here to Stay. North Yorkshire Council has made permanent its trial ban on motorcaravans parking overnight at coastal hotspots, including Scarborough. A lobby group says the move is short-sighted; a survey of nearly 7,000 motorcaravan owners suggests they'd spend more locally if better facilities existed.
π₯ Don't Light Up on the Moors. North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue is urging the public to avoid naked flames on the moors after last summer's Langdale Moor wildfire - caused by cooking equipment - grew to ten times the size of the Great Fire of London. People are already having barbecues up there.
π΅ Northern Soul Night at the Spa. Northern Live returns to the Grand Hall at Scarborough Spa on 3rd July with an 11-piece band and four lead vocalists covering more than 30 original hits - Out On The Floor, Tainted Love, The Snake and more. Seated, but dancing is encouraged.
π Calendar Girls Heads to the SJT. Gary Barlow and Tim Firth's award-winning musical is coming to the Stephen Joseph Theatre this summer. Tickets are on sale now at sjt.uk.com.
πΈ Filey Folk Festival Is Back. Over 100 musicians take over Filey from 1-3 May across venues including the Masonic Hall, the Bandstand, and newcomer Fado and Tide. Entry to all stages is free; a Β£1 festival guide covers the full programme.
β Casino Royale Gets a Coffee Upgrade. The amusement arcade at 47-48 Sandside has been retrospectively approved for conversion into a cafe, with planners noting it enhances rather than harms the harbour conservation area. Jimmy Corrigan's Ltd had already made the change before seeking permission.
ποΈ Big Ideas Digs Up the Past. The Grand Hotel hosts a one-day archaeology symposium on 16 May as part of Scarborough's Big Ideas Festival, with Egyptologist Professor Joann Fletcher among the speakers. Talks run across May at venues including St Mary's Church.
π Libraries: Stronger Than They Were. North Yorkshire Council says its controversial shift to volunteer-run libraries has paid off, with nearly 1.8 million visits and 1.9 million items borrowed in 2024/25. The council leader noted that critics had called it "the end of civilisation as we knew it."
π Filey's Play Parks Get a Β£400k Overhaul. Three play areas across Glen Gardens, Copse Hill, and Filey Country Park have been fully refurbished with accessible equipment as part of the wider Vision for Filey programme. A further Β£120,000 has been earmarked for the paddling pool.
π Rainbow Centre Plans a Fresh Start. Scarborough's Rainbow Centre - supporting the homeless and vulnerable for nearly 30 years - has announced plans for a Β£3-4 million rebuild on the Parish House site, with a larger cafe, charity shop, and improved day centre facilities. The build is expected to take up to two years.
π Laughter Deemed a Nuisance in Filey. North Yorkshire Council has refused Banks Lounge Bar on Murray Street permission for a rear outdoor drinking area, citing the intrusive nature of raised voices and laughter on neighbouring residents. The area would have held 35 people until 9.30 pm.

Deloitte: Robot βAdoption is Accelerating Exponentiallyβ
Robots are going from niche to mainstream, per Deloitte. They say itβs especially true in places where βphysical AI solves real problems.β Take the $1 trillion fast-food market, where brands turn to robots to alleviate 144% labor turnover.Β
At the forefront of this push is Miso Robotics, which is celebrating a decade of robotic innovation by preparing for its most impactful year yet.
Misoβs Flippy Fry Station AI robot has already been adopted by major brands like White Castle, frying 5M+ baskets of food to date. That earned strategic investment from industry powerhouse Ecolab and an unique collaboration with NVIDIA.
Now, after acquiring Zignyl, the powerful restaurant-operations tool, Miso adds powerhouse operators like Cinnabon, Jamba, and Jersey Mikeβs under their umbrella.
Next up? Misoβs scaling across a $4B/year revenue opportunity. Join 39,000+ people as an early-stage Miso investor before they reach 100,000+ target locations.
