Hey Scarborough! Here's what's happening this week πŸ‘‹

Someone had an unexpectedly long view of Scarborough on Monday afternoon. A person got stuck at the top of the Ferris wheel just after three. Fire crews were called, and the situation was resolved without further incident. The wheel is still there if you fancy it.

For something with both feet on the ground, the Yorkshire Coast Ceramics Fair runs through the Old Town this bank holiday weekend - open studios and exhibitions across seven venues, no admission charge, nothing you need to book.

The council is also moving to formalise what most people assumed was already the case: no camping, no fires, no barbecues in parks and green spaces from Peasholm to Pannett. The proposal follows a summer season that left a five-figure clearance bill.

Anyone weighing up a proper break might consider the H10 Conquistador in Playa de las Americas - recently refurbished, right on the seafront, and taking 20% off with the code SPRING26. Details here.

πŸ“° Scarborough Life

🏺 Old Town Gets Kiln It. This bank holiday weekend, the Yorkshire Coast Ceramics Fair takes over the Old Town with open studios, workshops, and exhibitions across seven venues from St Helen's Square to Blands Cliff. It's free, it's walkable, and it runs from Friday to Sunday.

🌊 400 Years Since Scarborough Got Wet. The town is marking the 400th anniversary of Thomasin Farrer's discovery of the mineral springs beneath the cliffs - the moment Scarborough became a spa town - with a year of events running through 2026, from lantern-making workshops to a commissioned bronze sculpture for South Bay. SeaFest in July is shaping up as the centrepiece.

πŸ”₯ No Fires, No Camping, No Surprises. The council is moving to ban wild camping, fires, and barbecues across nine parks and green spaces in Scarborough and Whitby - from Peasholm Park to Pannett Park - after unauthorised campers cost more than Β£30,000 to clear up in a single summer season.

🌊 Beachfront Tenerife at a discount. H10 Conquistador: Playa de las Americas is a recently revamped seafront hotel with direct promenade access and ocean views. Use code SPRING26 for a 20% discount. Check it out here.

🚽 Yorkshire Water Comes to the Library. A multimillion-pound investment in Scarborough's wastewater network is heading into consultation, with weekly drop-in sessions at Scarborough Library on Vernon Street every Tuesday from April 28 to June 2. Yorkshire Water is spending £8.3 billion across its network by 2030 - Scarborough is in the queue.

β›½ Gas Rig Refused - For Now. Councillors voted to provisionally refuse Europa Oil & Gas's plan for a 125ft drilling rig in Burniston following a near five-hour meeting and a demonstration outside. The company's CEO left promising an appeal.

🧘 Spa Town Does Spa Things. The Scarborough Wellbeing Fayre returns for its third year on Saturday, May 30, at the Royal Hotel on St Nicholas Street, with therapists, workshops, and free talks from 10 am to 4 pm. Organisers say they want to reconnect Scarborough with its heritage as a historic spa town - which, as of this year, is exactly 400 years old.

🐟 Papa’s Eyes Whitby Return. Papas Fish and Chips has applied to return to its former site at 76-79 Baxtergate, near the Swing Bridge, after Wendy's departed last month. Comments on the licence application are open until May 20.

🐦 The Gulls That Won't Nick Your Chips. The RSPB and Northern Powergrid have launched a joint project to monitor and protect kittiwakes nesting on Scarborough's buildings rather than cliff faces. The species is red-listed and globally vulnerable - the RSPB is keen to point out they are not the birds responsible for your missing battered sausage.

πŸ› Rice & Spice Wants a Licence. The 4.4-star Indian restaurant at 2 Pavilion Terrace, a short walk from Scarborough Railway Station, has applied to sell alcohol on the premises during its usual 5 pm to 11 pm hours. Representations to North Yorkshire Council's Licensing Services must be made in writing.

🎑 Ferris Wheel Situation Resolved. A person became stuck at the top of a Scarborough Ferris wheel at 3.11 pm on Monday. Fire crews attended, the ride restarted, and no further action was required.

🍺 Last Orders at The Plough. The Grade II listed Plough Inn in Sleights, near Whitby, has gone on the market for £375,000 freehold, complete with a main bar, lounge, dining room, three B&B rooms, and owner's accommodation. The pub is being sold with vacant possession.

🏦 Old Bank, New Round. The former Grade II-listed HSBC building at 4 Baxtergate in Whitby is being restored as The Treasury, a bar and restaurant due to open in June. It has already created 25 jobs ahead of opening, with more to follow when the food offering launches later in the year.

🚁 Drone Finds Ugthorpe Motorhome in Hartlepool. A motorhome stolen from the village of Ugthorpe overnight on April 13 was recovered ten days later after the owner followed a tracker signal to Hartlepool, and a police drone pinpointed the vehicle. North Yorkshire Police are asking anyone with information to call 101, quoting 12260066152.

🍺 The Duchess May Not Survive Last Orders. Plans have been resubmitted to convert The Duchess on Hovingham Drive into three flats and two bungalows, after an earlier application was refused. The former landlord's own statement describes the pub as one that "barely broke even."

πŸ–οΈ The Flags Are Back. RNLI lifeguards return to Cayton Bay, Filey, Sandsand, Scarborough North and South Bay, and Whitby from Saturday, May 2, patrolling daily between 10 am and 6 pm. This year marks 25 years of the RNLI's lifeguarding service on these beaches.

πŸ’¨ MoD Outvoted by a Windmill. North Yorkshire Council has approved a 46-metre wind turbine at Magdalen Grange Farm in Gristhorpe, near Filey. This is despite the Ministry of Defence warning that its aircraft may fly as low as 76 metres above terrain features in the area for low-level training. The new Vesta turbine replaces an existing, shorter one on the same site.

🐦 Puffins, Rockpools, and Seaweed Soap. Yorkshire Wildlife Trust has five events at Flamborough in May, from guided puffin walks at North Landing to a night-time rockpool safari and a seaweed pressing and soap-making morning. Booking is open now.

πŸš‚ Whitby Line Gets a Date. The North Yorkshire Moors Railway has confirmed that Bridge 42 near Grosmont will reopen on May 23, with the full Pickering to Whitby line running from June 1. Services are currently limited to Pickering to Goathland while propping repairs continue - a full structural repair follows in the winter closed season.

πŸͺ΅ Decking Denied on Church Street. A Norwegian couple who installed raised timber decking at their Whitby holiday let on Long Steps, Church Street, have appealed to the Secretary of State after North Yorkshire Council refused to regularise it. Planning officers found no public benefit that would outweigh the harm to the conservation area.
