Hey Scarborough! Here's what's happening this week π
South Bay's dog ban is now in force. After months of argument - and there was plenty of it - dogs are off Scarborough's South Bay for the season. Families with children get the run of the sand; dog owners get until autumn to make their peace with it.
If you're planning a wedding and haven't looked beyond the usual options, Egton Manor near Whitby is hosting a wedding fair on Sunday, 10th May, 11 am to 3 pm. The estate hosts just a handful of weddings a year, sleeps up to 31 guests on site, and is about as far from a function room as you can get.
For something a bit more immediate, Rudding Park near Harrogate - 300 acres, Grade I listed, voted Best UK Spa Hotel by The Sunday Times - has a dinner, rooftop spa and bed for two deal worth knowing about if you're after a night away.
And in October, a tipsy Romeo and Juliet is coming to Scarborough Spa. Sh*t-faced Shakespeare returns - one cast member performs drunk, the rest play it straight. It's on Friday, 2nd October.

The Key to Better aging: More NAD+
Most skincare works on the surface. Aramore goes where real aging begins: the basal layer of the skin, where new cells form. Backed by decades of research from Harvard and MIT scientists, Aramore is the first topical system designed to support skinβs NAD+ β the molecule your cells rely on for repair, energy, and resilience.
As NAD+ naturally declines with age, visible changes follow: dullness, uneven tone, fine lines, and loss of firmness. Aramoreβs unique complex of NAD+ precursors, ketones, and fatty acids helps replenish cells at the source for skin that acts healthier and younger.
Clinically shown to improve tone, radiance, smoothness, and firmness as soon as 28 days.
π° Scarborough Life
π Dogs Off South Bay. After months of fierce local debate, dogs are now banned from Scarborough's South Bay for the season - giving beachgoers and their children the run of the sand without worrying what they're stepping in. The ban lifts again in autumn.
ποΈ Empty Homes, New Purpose. North Yorkshire Council is converting three vacant Scarborough properties into eight flats for homeless households, aiming to cut reliance on B&Bs. Emergency accommodation spend has risen 400 per cent since 2019.
π Sh*t-faced Shakespeare Returns. The deliberately-unsteady theatre troupe brings a tipsy Romeo and Juliet to Scarborough Spa on Friday 2nd October, with one cast member performing drunk while the rest play it straight.
πΒ Deal on Dinner, Rooftop Spa & Bed for Two at Grade 1 Listed Regency House. Rudding Park is set in 300 acres near Harrogate, family-owned and was voted Best UK Spa Hotel by The Sunday Times. Find the details.
π Taxi Fares Heading North. North Yorkshire Council is set to approve a five per cent hike in maximum taxi fares on 12th May, the first change since July 2024. Diesel costs have risen 42 per cent in that time.
ποΈ Filey Road Retail Park Draws Objections. More than 60 residents and Scarborough Town Council have objected to a proposed 2,700 square metre retail park on Filey Road, with concerns it will pull footfall away from an already-struggling high street. No decision date has been set.
π₯ A&E Waits Falling, But Not Enough. Twelve-hour trolley waits at York, and Scarborough's emergency departments have dropped from 930 in January to 237 in March. The trust's target is 8.9 per cent - they're currently at 9.3.
πΊ Last Orders for the Duchess? Scarborough Town Councillors have objected to plans to convert the Duchess pub on Hovingham Drive into flats, citing loss of amenity. The pub's own former licensee, though, says the local community don't see it as a significant asset.
π Rainbow Centre Plans Rebuild. The Rainbow Centre on Castle Road - supporting Scarborough's homeless and vulnerable for 29 years - wants to demolish its current Parish House base and replace it with a purpose-built three-and-a-half-storey facility. It makes around 12,500 critical interventions a year from a building described as having reached breaking point.
π¦ Filey Bird Garden Becomes Filey Zoo. After nine years operating under a zoo licence, Filey Bird Garden and Animal Park has officially rebranded as Filey Zoo - a name that better reflects its 75-plus species. It opened in 2008 as a bird garden.
π Egton Manor Opens for Wedding Fair. The Egton Manor estate near Whitby is hosting a wedding fair on Sunday, 10th May, 11 am to 3 pm, giving couples a look at one of the area's more private venues. The estate hosts just a handful of weddings each year and sleeps up to 31 guests on site.
π₯ Scarborough Hospital Gets Oxygen Store. North Yorkshire Council has approved plans for a new oxygen bottle storage facility at Scarborough Hospital on Woodlands Drive - a galvanised steel structure 2.4 metres tall, tucked beside a pair of pine trees.
π¨ Westborough Mural Set to Grow. North Yorkshire Council has submitted plans to extend the existing mural at 3 West Square - adding a hand-painted section to the gable end of the Grade II listed building facing Westborough. The existing mural is already 8 metres wide and 11 metres tall.
